Using Lidar to Examine Extinction Coefficients and Raman Scattering

چکیده

The problem of producing extinction profiles for specific atmospheric compounds using Raman scattering is examined. This was done using the Klett stable analytical inversion solution for processing lidar returns and Raman scattering, while using data received from Hampton University’s lidar. Klett extinction profiles are examined from July 20, 2011 and Raman extinction profiles for Nitrogen are compared to Klett method profiles from March 7, 2012. It was found that extinction profiles can be made from Raman scattering data, but the data used was not strong enough to produce a clean result, even with a significant amount of averaging. This was caused by many factors, including having a weak signal, assuming a constant lidar ratio, and light pollution.

Use of rotational Raman measurements in multiwavelength aerosol lidar for evaluation of particle backscattering and extinction

Vibrational Raman scattering from nitrogen is commonly used in aerosol lidars for evaluation of particle backscattering (β) and extinction (α) coefficients. However, at mid-visible wavelengths, particularly in the daytime, previous measurements have possessed low signal-to-noise ratio. Also, vibrational scattering is characterized by a significant frequency shift of the Raman component, so for ...

Technical Note: One year of Raman-lidar measurements in Gual Pahari EUCAARI site close to New Delhi in India – Seasonal characteristics of the aerosol vertical structure

One year of multi-wavelength (3 backscatter + 2 extinction + 1 depolarization) Raman lidar measurements at Gual Pahari, close to New Delhi, were analysed. The data was split into four seasons: spring (March–May), summer (June–August), autumn (September–November) and winter (December–February). The vertical profiles of backscatter, extinction, and lidar ratio and their variability during each se...

The Setup and the Performances of L’aquila Raman Lidar and Standard Ptu and Pto3 Balloon Soundings for Envisat Validation

We report the design and the performances of a Raman lidar for monitoring the tropospheric aerosol backscattering and extinction coefficients, water vapor mixing ratio and cloud liquid water. After describing the system components, along with the current limitations and options for improvement, we report examples of observations. The PTU and PTO3 balloon soundings are carried on with standard i...

Three years of routine Raman lidar measurements of tropospheric aerosols: Backscattering, extinction, and residual layer height

We have performed a three-year series of routine lidar measurements at preselected times. The measurements were performed between 1 December 1997, and 30 November 2000, at Kühlungsborn, Germany (5407 N, 1146 E). Using a Rayleigh/Mie/Raman lidar system, we measured the aerosol backscatter coefficients at three wavelengths and the extinction coefficient at one wavelength. The present data analysi...
